Why a book about iguanas?
My research on iguanas showed that they are very unique
creatures and require much more specialized care than
most pet stores reveal. Many iguanas that are kept as
pets are improperly cared for and suffer from malnutrition.
Since iguanas can carry bacteria such as salmonella, people
with immune deficiencies should not handle them. As an
experienced mom and owner of an iguana, it occurred to
me that incorporating an iguana with the alphabet could
teach children about an iguana's lifestyle while also
teaching them their ABCs.
Taking
care of an iguana is demanding, making it much more difficult
for a young child to be its sole caretaker. This book
is intended to teach both children and their parents.
Having had an iguana as a pet for several years, I
learned that the financial responsibility is far greater
than I anticipated. Housing, heating and veterinary care
is expensive. It is very time consuming to feed Drako
fresh greens and vegetables and to clean the enclosure
daily. Only someone who is educated about the responsibilities
and special requirements of these unique creatures should
consider having one as a pet.
If
you are seriously interested in owning an iguana, do your
research first. You can find lots of great information
about these creatures at your local library, at bookstores
or on the Internet.
