Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal

FOR MEN & WOMEN
Here are some of the most common questions
people ask about laser hair removal.
If you have a question that isn't answered here,
please give us a call and we'll be happy to speak with you.
How does laser hair removal work? The laser works by emitting a beam of light that passes through the skin to the root of the hair follicle, where it is absorbed.   The laser energy is then transformed into heat, which disables the hair follicle.   As a result, the hair growth is significantly impeded, or permanently eliminated.   Specialized cooling is used to gently freeze the skin, allowing skin protection, while removing the unwanted hair.
Which areas can be treated? Nearly any area with unwanted hair can be treated.  Large and small areas such as the legs, back, chest, arms, bikini areas, underarms and facial hair.
Who is a candidate for laser hair removal? Since light energy is absorbed by the pigment melanin, individuals with light skin and dark hair follicles are ideal.   Black skinned individuals are not good candidates for laser hair removal.   However, our laser can safely treat many darker skin individuals due to its advanced technology.
What precautions do I need to take? You need to avoid natural and artificial sun exposure for 4-6 weeks before and after your treatment.   Unprotected sun exposure may result in damage to your skin.  If in the sun, a sunscreen of SPF 25 or higher is recommended.  Unlike other hair removal methods that require some degree of growth prior to treatment, all you need to do is shave before coming in for your appointment.  You must avoid tweezing, waxing, and electrolysis 4-6 weeks prior for best results.  If you have a history of herpes (sores e.g.) involving the area to be treated, prophylactic anti viral therapy may be taken prior to treatment.
Is the treatment painful?

The degree of discomfort will vary with each person.  Our advanced laser uses TKS® and a special cooling system to maximize safety, effectiveness and minimize discomfort.  If at all concerned about sensitivity, please ask about topical anesthetic creams called Emla which is a prescription, or Ela-Max which is non-prescription, prior to treatment.

How many treatments will I need to achieve satisfactory hair removal? Most clients will require 6 treatments.  This is due to the various stages in which hair grows.   More or less treatments may be needed depending upon your skin, hair color and coarseness of hair.
